All Games Release

- Zach Gage Orta Therox

Today we’re launching something that on the surface may seem quite boring, but has actually taken us several years to design — The All Games page. I can hear you all saying “How could this possibly take several years to design, Zach?” Well, let me tell you.

The core idea of Puzzmo is that it’s a games page like a newspaper games page. All of our games are right there on the main page and you can scroll past the ones you don’t like to get to the ones that you do like. We do this for a good reason: It’s important to us that you, as the player, feel comfortable exploring and trying new games. We believe that seeing games, even if you’re not playing them, over and over again, over weeks or months, slowly acclimates you to them, excites your brain, and makes you start to imagine what they might be like to play. This means that when you eventually do click on one, you’re way more likely to enjoy it and play it again in the future.

When we launched, this was just a hunch that we had. Now we have the data and we know it works. But also, when we launched, we only had 5 games. Now we have 17, and that’s not counting remixes. You just can’t put 17 games on one page anymore. It feels pretty overwhelming to everyone.

So we knew we wanted to change things up to make a way where your today page is mostly the games you want to play with a few places for us to show you the stuff that you’re unsure about. And we knew we needed a way for you to add new games to that spot.

So we adopted a new metaphor. Your today page is now called your playlist. If you’ve been playing Puzzmo up until now, your playlist will include any games you played in the last month, and if you haven’t yet registered an account, your playlist will include only the default games that we show to all new players.

To encourage seeing new things, we also have several modules on your playlist, like the featured section or the daily challenge.

You can easily remove games from your playlist by clicking the hearts next to their names, and if you’d like to add more games, we have a brand new ‘All Games’ section. Inside all games, you can see every game on the site just by scrolling down, or you can look through our games by selecting a tag from the cloud up top. We think it’s best to think about what you might be looking for before you wade into the full list, but we wanted to give you options to do both. Each game in all games is presented similarly to how you would see them on the today page — a thumbnail of today’s puzzle (and your progress in it). So even if you do explore the full list we think it feels pretty good to look at all of those games and imagine what they might be like to play.
